Good on you for your initiative. I am also finding that there is a trend for people to start getting together in person after meeting each other on Twitter or other social networks. A recent example for me was the Twestival where we met and raised funds for Charity Water. I also had lunch last week with a group of telecommunications professionals, invited through Facebook.

Some people say that social networks are less personal and stop people from living in the real world, but I disagree.

I agree with the commend that, "no matter what age, race, ethnicity..." residents want to connect with other people and want to make their neighborhood better...but who has time?

I try and be a good neighbor...my family and I try and keep our yard nice, we don't leave our trash can out, no tacky lawn junk...but I am growing more and more frustrated with our local government. As citizens we do our part to keep property up (not just for our own financial investment and family's safety, but for the overall good of the neighborhood) but local government - particulary CMPD is NOT keeping up their part of the relationship! How insulting to be told that my only option to keep my property safe is to spend more of my own money to pay for off-duty patrols!!! I realize CMPD is the City Council's primary responsibilty, but since this is a County sponsored blog I'll ask...where is the County Commission when we need them?!?!?!?!?

Looks like this is a stimulating topic. Click on the link to McGillicuddy's Blog to the right for some additional thoughts on being a good citizen. Thanks.

A good citizen:
1. Recognizes that the collective power of government should be used sparingly and does not seek to have it used to further his own personal needs
2. Understands that government, left to its own devices, expands its own power at the expense of the citizen's liberty and so keeps a watchful, and wary eye on those in government.
3. Recognizes that he has no right to the labor of his neighbors and so does not ask to take it from them in the form of taxes in order to pay for personal wants or needs.
4. Recognizes that tolerance of bad behavior and unproductive habits is not conducive to a functioning society and so exhibits high standards himself and boldly proclaims low standards where he sees them.

"Community" can also be very fluid. I am in a "community" when I worship at my church, 30 minutes from my home, and not see those people again for a week. I am also in an online "community" when posting on this site which might be accessed in Denmark as well as Dilworth, or playing an internet game with people in Spain.

A good citizen does not litter the streets of Charlotte. A good citizen waves and gets to know their neighbors. A good citizen does not drive through a School Zone on Park Road or Pineville-Matthews Road at 60 mph. A good citizen allows other drivers to merge into traffic. A good citizen slows downs, takes notes and reports suspicious vehicles or activity that they see in their neighborhood. A good citizen votes in every local primary and national election.

Community is where you frequent. Your church, your YMCA, your local mall, your neighborhood Swim & Racquet Club, your favorite restaurants Uptown, South Park, Dilworth, Ballantyne, NoDa, your favorite entertainment venues ... Checkers Hockey @ TW Arena, Baseball @ Knights Castle, Concerts @ Verizon Pavillion. It's up to the individual. Do they feel more comfortable spending the night out 10 minutes from their home or they willing to drive for 20 minutes and try a new restaurant or ride the Lynx for 15 minutes, depart & walk directly into TW Arena & enjoy an evening of sports or music.
